When I was first given the opportunity to be a part of the Survivors to Superheroes team, the non profit was still in its very early stages. I had just moved to New York for school and had met Julia in a creative writing class we had together. She introduced me to the organization, informed me that they were in search of members, and invited me to join the board. I was immediately intrigued and excited to help. As the first secretary on the board of Survivors to Superheroes I have been incredibly lucky to witness many important and historic moments for the organization. One of the first meetings we had together as a board, we all sat around a dining room table and wrote the first version of the official bylaws. It was such an amazing experience to be sitting in a room with the founders and other board members, and watch as what had previously only been a dream came to life before our eyes.
Starting a nonprofit has not been an easy process, and I have been a witness to the ups and downs of creating this organization. The process has been a long one, but the strength and determination of Julia our founder and president, as well as the other board members has been inspirational, and made the triumphs that much more incredible.
In addition to my duties as a secretary during this time, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to help research and edit content for the website as well as writing for the organization. Unfortunately life has prevented me from continuing on with being the secretary for the board, but I will continue to contribute to the organization and you will see my name on the website and in the journal!
This has been an amazing journey, and it is truly incredible to see how far this organization has gotten. What started out as 6 people sitting around a table has now grown into a website and a literature journal, with so much more to come. The staff has doubled and continues to grow. Sexual violence has touched many people in my life, and I am incredibly lucky to be a part of this wonderful orginization that helps fight for all those who have been affected, and turns survivors into superheros.
