During the past few weeks, our Survivors to Superheroes team has been working incredibly hard, preparing for the launch of our organization. When Survivors was conceptualized it was my dream, but I have to be honest in saying that I was never quite sure it would become a reality. It has taken four years from the moment that my mom and I thought up the idea for survivors, to the launch. There have been some extremely difficult moments throughout this process as well as some absolutely incredible ones, and I am beyond proud of all the people who have invested time and energy creating this organization. Being constantly surrounded by brilliant people who share my passion and goal has been a wonderful and rewarding experience. I have gotten to work with my best friends, my mom, and fantastic people that I have met and grown closer to through being the President.
I am very excited to see how many people Survivors to Superheroes helps, just like it has helped me, my family, Sandy, and many of the other board and staff members. When we came up with survivors, I had just gone through multiple assaults and needed help. The issue was there were no organizations that specialized in working with young adults and teenagers, and in return, young people are forced to live with trauma by themselves. It became our goal to create the much needed support and education system that we were looking for.
Through developing Survivors to Superheroes and working with both last term’s board, and the current board, I have healed more than I ever thought possible. Although I still suffer from PTSD that affects my daily life, I am finally able to understand that what happened to me was not my fault. Every time that I fall back into the depths of trauma, instead of staying down for weeks or even months on end, I am able to pull myself out. I’ve also been able to develop better coping skills and no longer allow all of the pain surrounding the violence to live only inside of me. I share my story more and seek help when I can. Recovery is a journey, and although I still have a long way to go, Survivors has clearly accelerated the process.
I am honoured to see Survivors to Superheroes launch and grow into the organization that we all desperately need. Young survivors deserve love and support, and the societal change starts here.
